Speaker Biographies - Tom Barnes


Dr. Tom Barnes

Dr. Barnes is the Kentucky state Extension Wildlife Specialist and a full professor in the Department of Forestry at the University of Kentucky. He holds his doctorate in wildlife & fisheries sciences from Texas A&M University, a master of science in wildlife & fisheries science from South Dakota State University, and a Bachelor of Arts, Magna Cum Laude, from Huron College in South Dakota. Dr. Barnes has been on the Department of Forestry faculty at the University of Kentucky for 20 years and is an internationally published, award-winning author and photographer. During this tenure he has published more than 35 research papers, 48 extension publications and more than 60 regional and national magazine articles. He has supervised numerous graduate students and his research emphasis focuses on using herbicides to restore native grasslands. His primary extension responsibilities lie in the area of protecting biodiversity, urban wildlife conservation, and wildlife damage management.
